ASTRA Library is the first public library of Romanians from Transylvania (1869).
The oldest book found in their collection is Sexti libri Decretalium …, MDXI (1511) by Pope Bonifacius VIII.
The oldest Romanian book found in the library’s collection is the Slavonic Sbornicul, printed by Coresi, in Sas-Sebeș, in 1580.
The total collection of the ASTRA Sibiu County Library, according to the latest statistics, counts 847.455 documents (at the end of 2014) and includes: books, periodicals, CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, audio cassettes, video cassettes, discs, filmstrips, slides, tape recorders, manuscripts, manuscript books, correspondence documents, iconographic documents, old Romanian books (BRV), old foreign books, rare books, cartographic documents, bookplates, medals and others.
The books collection includes documents in German, French, English, Russian, Hungarian, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Hebrew, Esperanto and is permanently enriched through purchases or donations, substantially richer after 1990.
