Situated in an area with powerful inter-ethnic and inter-religious characteristics, Babes-Bolyai University adopted multiculturalism,
as main line of development, having students and professors pertaining to Romanian, Hungarian or German ethnic groups.

The university in Cluj is the result of a long evolution and series of trials in the attempt of establishing a powerful cultural center for a
higher degree education in Transylvania – an area that never stops attracting the West-Europeans, an area of religious and political confrontations that have been part of our continent’s history.

Babes-Bolyai University is the oldest academic institution in Romania that has undertaken the entire academic tradition in Transilvania.
It was inaugurated together with the Jesuit College founded in Cluj by prince Bathory Stefan in 1581.

Babes-Bolyai University brings together the entire cultural, scientific and confessional tradition in Transylvania. Babes-Bolyai University
has a multicultural and multilingual educational program according to the Romania law in force and in agreement with the European values.

The development mentioned above implied many crucial decisions and radical new initiatives regarding the organization of the study programs, the scientific research development, the extension of its services, the building of advanced communication networks and the involvement of this institution in the democratic process in Romania.
